Using Sex Toys as a Tool to Heal From Trauma

How can survivors reclaim pleasure after trauma? How can we use sex toys as tools for our healing journeys? How can we affirm pleasure as a human right for everyone—including survivors? We’ll talk about the intersection of trauma education and sex toy education, sex toy basics and safety, using sex toys as pleasure mapping tools to rediscover and reconnect with your body as a survivor, and self-care. All survivors are welcome. Sarah’s work is informed by an inclusive definition of trauma that recognizes many types of traumas can affect pleasure.

Healing, Pleasure, and Sex After Trauma

How can we reclaim pleasure after trauma? What can sex, intimacy, and masturbation look like after trauma? In this workshop, we’ll explore how survivors can craft our own individualized paths toward healing outside of traditional narratives that neglect sex and sexuality. We’ll talk about positive motivations and affirmations for sexual healing, using sex toys as a tool to heal from trauma, self-care tips for survivors, and finding sex-positive community support. All trauma survivors are welcome for this workshop. Sarah’s work is informed by an inclusive definition of trauma that recognizes many types of traumas can affect sex and pleasure — including sexual trauma, chronic illness, death, pregnancy loss, religious trauma, systemic violence and oppression, etc.

Introduction to Sex Toys

Dildos, butt plugs, and vibrators… oh my! In this fun, dynamic workshop, Sarah explores the wide world of sex toys, what makes a toy body-safe, and the basics of shopping for sex toys and knowing which retailers and manufacturers you can trust. We’ll also delve into deeper topics like breaking down sex toy stigma, using sex toys to heal from sexual trauma, and why education about sex toys in this political moment is so important.

Pleasure Is Your Birthright: From Sex Toys to Sexual Freedom

What do sex toys have to do with social justice, sexual liberation, and political resistance? Join Sarah for this interactive workshop and learn about how pleasure is your birthright! We’ll cover body-safe sex toy basics and why sex toy materials are a key part of sexual freedom, what we should expect from sex toy companies, the importance of supporting feminist sex shops in this political moment, and how we can see pleasure as resistance.

Webinar Testimonials

“Sarah was an absolute joy to work with, from beginning to end. They led their ‘Healing, Pleasure, and Sex After Trauma’ workshop for the Women’s Resource Center in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Although we had planned for Sarah to give this workshop in person, we unexpectedly had to transition to a virtual format due to COVID-19. Sarah held the event via Zoom, and fostered a gentle space of bravery, healing, and learning. They were able to shift quickly, be flexible and communicative throughout the entire process, and seamlessly facilitated a successful event.”

— Elzbeth, Director of the Women’s Resource Center at San Diego State University

“Sarah facilitated Healing, Pleasure, and Sex After Trauma for Sexual Assault Awareness Month at San Diego State University in April 2020, and it was a tremendous success. What sets their work apart is their commitment to personalizing their workshops to both the needs of our students and situating their content within the context of current events. This workshop was held during the COVID-19 pandemic and facilitated through Zoom. Sarah is a natural at virtually engaging students in meaningful conversations on incredibly difficult and emotionally heavy topics and fostering a brave, safe, environment for participants to learn and reflect. Overall, Sarah was lovely to work with, and their event was certainly one of the highlights of our semester.”

— Lori, Assistant Director of the Women’s Resource Center at San Diego State University

“During Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2020 we were forced to take our programming online to protect our community from COVID-19. Wanting to have a session for survivors on rebuilding relationships after trauma we hired Sarah Brynn Holliday to do a online workshop with our students. Unsure what to expect in this virtual environment, we were beyond thrilled with the results. Sarah was smart, engaging, thoughtful, and our students loved it.”

— Angela Clark-Taylor, PhD, Director of the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women at Case Western Reserve University
