About Sarah

Hi! I’m Sarah Brynn, Femme-in-Chief here at Formidable Femme. I’m a sexuality writer, speaker, sex toy company consultant, and queer smut peddler based in Salem, Massachusetts. I’m also a spooky femme, a queer feminist, an abortion funder, and a devotee of bread and black lipstick. My pronouns are they/them/theirs.

I started Formidable Femme in May 2015 after writing an undergraduate senior project paper on how to craft a revolutionary model of sex education in the United States, with a strong focus on accessible, comprehensive online education. After researching sex blogs for months, I created my own. I have always been fascinated by sex, sexuality, and sex education, so coupling that with my love of writing seemed like the perfect way to carve out my own little corner of the internet. Here we are, nearly six years later!

Much of my work as an educator centers around healing, pleasure, and sex after trauma. You’ll find that’s what I write about often here, too. My experience as a trauma survivor—and my refusal to forgive my abusers—has impacted my life in innumerable ways. My intention as an educator and writer is to create space for fellow survivors to have safer places to talk candidly with one another about trauma, sexuality, and healing outside of the confines of the good survivor narrative. (Pssst: I do workshops about this, too.)

That’s not all, though! My other main sex education focus revolves around pushing for ethical, equitable, feminist business practice within the sex toy industry. This is where the consulting comes in—contact me if you’re interested in learning more. I also call out companies that are behaving badly and am especially known for my unending hatred for LELO. (More on that here, here, and lots and lots here.) I sometimes review sex toys, too, and you’ll find most of those reviews if you read through earlier posts from 2015 and 2016.

In 2020, I started writing erotica. I’m having the best time sharing queer, trans smut with the world! You can find my fiction here.

Since beginning my writing and education work, I’ve been featured on MTV News, guested on Between the Pages, Dawn Serra’s Sex Gets Real podcast, and Sex City Radio, been named as a top sex blogger on Kinkly and Molly’s Daily Kiss’s annual lists, and been interviewed for articles in Broadly and Pacific Standard.

As part of my sex education work, I’ve presented at Woodhull’s Sexual Freedom Summit, a US conference for sexual freedom activists, Eroticon, a UK conference for sex writers, and the Women of Sex Tech Virtual Conference; taught workshops at feminist sex shops across the country, including Sugar and Dynamo; and spoken at universities across the country, including Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Case Western Reserve University, and San Diego State University.

When I’m not writing or talking about sex, you can usually find me curled up reading dystopian fiction, watching endless reruns of Frasier, or wandering the grocery store in the hope of finding a treasure trove of warm baguettes.

I’m glad you’re here! If you’re interested in working with me, bringing me to your campus or shop, or if you just have a question, don’t hesitate to reach out.

If you’d like to support my work, I accept donations through PayPal. You can also shop for sex toys through my fantastic affiliate, SheVibe!
